SARASOTA (November 20, 2012) – Joseph Axtell, a University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee senior majoring in business, recently won a social media contest on Pinterest sponsored by Volvo, and will take the road trip of a lifetime.
In the contest, Volvo asked Pinterest users to create “Volvo Joyride” pin boards illustrating their ideal road trip during the period of September 5 to September 26. Contestants had to specify destinations, roadside attractions, clothing choices, music selections and fun activities that they would include in their itinerary, while also mixing in photos and information about Volvo and its 2013 model S60 T5 AWD car. Axtell fashioned his winning Pinterest submission around a road trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. to visit friends.
“It makes me so happy to win a trip from a car manufacturer that puts safety first and listens to what their customers want in automobiles,” Axtell says. “This #VolvoJoyride trip will give me the opportunity to really get a feel for how the S60 T5 AWD handles in summer weather as well as winter. Even though I’m 23, Volvo is something I one day aspire to own! It is also very cool that I can show my experience to people through a real life standpoint. I love cars so much and I am still in shock that I have been granted this awesome opportunity.”
Three contest winners, including Axtell, get use of the Volvo S60 T5 AWD for four days as well as a two-night hotel stay, gas, food, clothing, music, food and drinks to enjoy during their road trip. He and his fiancé plan to spend one night in Nashville, Tn, on their way to Colorado Springs. Throughout the journey, which begins on December 1, Axtell will be describing every aspect of his on-the-road experience, from entertainment to the car’s mechanics and comfort features.
As a business student, Axtell has learned the importance of social media expertise as a tool in running a successful enterprise, and sees this as an opportunity to showcase the publicity value of social marketing.
“Social media is so important in the cyber world we have today,” he notes. “Coming from the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee School of Business, I have been taught in so many classes the importance of social media. For some it’s simply a way to connect with our most loved friends and family. For someone like me and many others (like Volvo), it is a way to promote your business, present your career credentials and build a future for personal or business matters. I am hoping to promote this trip in a way that shows Volvo Corporation and other businesses my knowledge as well as my passion for the things I love most…cars!”
Axtell also sees this Volvo promotion as a savvy marketing strategy for the company. “Instead of Volvo making another commercial, they went down a trending avenue to spend their valuable ad dollars,” he says. “With its increased engine performance, Volvo is targeting a younger male demographic.”
USF Sarasota-Manatee and Axtell will partner to provide constant updates of his trip utilizing social media outlets as well as the official platforms of the university. Fans and followers can join Axtell every step of the way by following USFSM on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Axtell created the #volvojoyride fan page for his postings. During the trip, USFSM will also host a Livestream where Axtell can post photos, updates and videos from Sarasota to his end destination of Colorado Springs, Colo.
