Bio

Dr. John R. Walker is the McKibbon Professor and a Fulbright Senior Specialist of hotel and restaurant management at the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee campus. John is the former Dean and Marshall Professor of the School of Hospitality Management at United States International University, San Diego, California.

John's years of industry experience includes management training at the Savoy Hotel London. Followed by terms as food and beverage manager, assistant rooms division manager, catering manager, and general manager with Grand Metropolitan Hotels, Selsdon Park Hotel, Rank Hotels, Inter-Continental Hotels, and the Coral Reef Resort Barbados, West Indies.

For several years John has been an award winning professor at two-and four-year schools in Canada and the United States. He received the President's award of Merit based on teaching excellence, scholarship and service, each year from its inception in 1992 until 2003 when he moved to USF. In 1999 he received the President's award for Scholarship.

In addition to being a Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management consultant, he has been published in The New York Times, The Cornell Hotel Restaurant Administration Quarterly; The Hospitality Educators Journal and is a member of the editorial review board of the journal: Progress in Tourism and Hospitality Research and The Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism. He is an advisory board member for Pearson's Hospitality and Tourism publications. John has also been invited to teach and give seminars in Thailand; The Philippines; Taiwan; Hong Kong, Japan; Germany; Switzerland; England; Canada and Mexico.

John is a leading author of hospitality and tourism textbooks, having authored the following texts which have been translated into several different languages:

  • The Restaurant: from Concept to Operation 6th Ed, John Wiley & Sons. (2012).
  • Supervision in the Hospitality Industry7th. Ed., with Jack E. Miller, John Wiley

  • He was a contributing author to The Encyclopedia of Tourism, 2000 Published by
  • Routledge.

John is a past president of the Pacific chapter and a board member of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE). He is a Certified Hotel Administrator and a Certified Foodservice Management Professional.

John enjoys traveling, tennis, sailing, skiing, swimming and a variety of cultural, recreational and artistic activities. He and his wife Josielyn, along with their twins Christopher and Selina, live in Sarasota, Florida and Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. John sponsors ten children's schooling and college education and supports the Catholic Bishop's Appeal, UNICEF, The Salvation Army, Operation Smile and World Vision.
