Distance Learning Course Delivery Information
USF Sarasota-Manatee offers a number of courses using different distance learning options. As you browse the course schedule, please note the Delivery Method designations that are listed in the far right column. Listed below are the requirements and delivery method codes for distance learning courses.
While there is no mandatory course attendance policy for distance learning classes, Students are encouraged to communicate with their instructors the first week of classes for distance learning courses through the delivery method for the course. Mandatory Course Attendance Policy
DELIVERY METHOD COURSE CODING
T = TELECOURSES
Telecourses or tape-delayed classes are broadcast on WUSF-TV and the Educational Channel, (for Bright House cable subscribers in Hillsborough County) and other outlets (Estream). Most telecourses are available as video-on-demand using the Internet. Telecourses typically use a web component (Blackboard) for syllabus and other instructional content; an active e-mail account and Internet access is required. May require minimal on-campus attendance for orientations, reviews, or exams.
V = VIDEOCONFERENCE
Videoconference courses are two-way video and two-way audio that allow students and faculty to see and hear each other at multiple locations in
a real-time format. Locations include all four USF campuses, other Florida Universities, and selected community sites. These courses are often blended with online courses. Video conference courses are offered through a Polycom system.
W = WEB COURSE
Web courses are offered online through the Internet using delivery tools such as, Blackboard or Elluminate. Some
web courses are totally on-line and others include several face-to-face class
sessions.
Blackboard is the University's academic portal used for asynchronous delivery of courses. In addition, it provides student access to email, grades, discussion boards and more.
Elluminate provides a virtual meeting space where instructors and student groups meet, hear each other and share documentation. It is often used with online work in a blended course to give students synchronistic meeting times to accompany their live multi-media collaboration. Note that your computer needs a microphone and speakers or appropriate headphones to be able to talk and hear while you are in the Elluminate meeting. Some courses are designed to be both synchronous (online during class sessions)
and asynchronous (online viewing of recorded class sessions
afterward). Recorded sessions remain online for viewing and review throughout the
course term.
