Sarasota resident, Louise Harrison, will become USFSM’s College of Education inaugural fellow for our arts integration education program.  Ms. Harrison, sister of the late Beatle, George Harrison, will facilitate bringing Beatle tribute band concerts to local high schools this fall.

The Florida Association of Teacher Education (FATE) recently announced that Dr. Byrd-Blake has been elected by the members of he FATE for the 3-year position of President.  Dr. Byrd-Blake will be recognized and officially seated on he Board of Direcors as President-elect at the FATE Business Meeting on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

On Friday, April 27th, Dr. Stephen Graves was honored at a retirement reception for his illustrIous career in the USF system, both at the campus in Tampa earlier in his career and in the College of Education at USFSM. USFSM Regional Chancellor, Dr. Arthur Guilford, also awarded the first ever USFSM College of Education Emeritus Professor status to Dr. Graves who will remain active in the field and in the local school community upon retirement.  Dr. Graves first came to Florida as Chair and Professor in the USF Tampa Department of Childhood/Language Arts/Reading Education from 1996-’98 where he earned tenure.  After several years there, he relocated to USFSM as a professor and later served as Interim Associate Dean of the College of Education from 2005-’06. Dr. Graves will be sorely missed by both the faculty and staff in the College of Education and all the many students whose lives he touched as a well respected and much beloved professor.

At the Faculty/Staff Recognition Day event hosted by Regional Chancellor Arthur Guilford on Aprl 12, 2012, Dr. Liz Larkin from the USFSM College of Education was recognized for her exemplary service as a faculty member both within the university and in the community.  The award was determined by her faculty peers.  Congratulations to Dr. Larkin for a well deserved recognition!

Yeterday, Kate Shackelford graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. That in itself is a wonderful accomplishment, but Kate was also awarded the Golden Bull Award for Service and Leaderhsip for creating programs to inspire elementary school students from tough socio-economic neighborhoods to include college in their future.
