Four students at the University of South Florida
Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) applied as participants in
the National Conference for Undergraduate Research
(NCUR) and all four were accepted. These four
students were selected from over 3,100 submissions.
Hosted at Weber State University in Utah from March
29-31, NCUR promotes undergraduate research,
scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of
study. The annual conference gives undergraduate
scholars in all fields and from all types of
institutions of higher learning a forum to share the
results of their work through posters,
presentations, performances and works of art. |

Congratulations to ISS student Jennifer DeLorey for having her paper, “Sun, Sand, Sea, Sex…& Slavery?: Human Trafficking in Florida,” accepted for presentation at the 2011 Popular & American Culture Associations in the South Conference. Jennifer wrote the paper for her capstone project in Dr. Donna Trent’s (Interdisciplinary Social Sciences) Senior Seminar in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. |

English Society Writing Contest winners Announced |
|
Dr. Valerie Lipscomb (English, Literature & Writing) announced "Blaine Salzman (English, Literature) and Krista Schrock(English, Professional & Technical Writing) are the winners of the English Society writing contest and will be attending the Sigma Tau Delta convention in New Orleans. Both of them have the opportunity to submit their papers for possible presentation at the convention, so let's wish them luck in the selection process. I'm sure they will represent USFSM well." |

the student completed after the
class covered a unit on writing performance
reviews. Dr. Davidson asked the Journal of
Accountancy, which is the major publication of
the AICPA (American Institute of CPAs) if
they would be interested in publishing their
work - They were! |

 Thursday, May 5th, the following students in the USF Sarasota-Manatee's English Society and Sigma Tau Delta chapter were honored in a ceremony for their service and academic achievement. |

 The College of Arts & Sciences held
an Honors Colloquium, Monday, April 25th 5:00 -
6:30pm in the Selby Auditorium, USF
Sarasota-Manatee.
The program featured presentations by
graduating students of the inaugural cohort of
the USF Sarasota-Manatee Honors Program.
Presentations reflected each student’s thesis
research, all of which explored topics related
to a common area of inquiry: Humanism, the
Reformation, and Shakespeare. The Honors Colloquium also recognized the Outstanding Students selected by the faculty of each degree program in the College of Arts & Sciences, as well as students who have produced scholarly excellence beyond their coursework in the past academic year. | Spring 2011 “Golden Bull Service and Outstanding Leadership” |
| The Spring 2011 “Golden Bull Service and Outstanding Leadership” awardee is Psychology major Jami Worley. This USF Sarasota-Manatee Student Government Association sponsored award is given to a graduating, undergraduate student who has consistently given his or her time and energy to make the USF Sarasota-Manatee Community a better place for all students by contributing to campus life. The recipient of this award is determined based on the scope of leadership activities, the individual’s community involvement, university involvement and academic success. The selection Committee was made up of Faculty, Staff, and Student. Congratulations to Jami !! |
 Information Technology Student awarded SMART scholarship!!! |
We are pleased to announce that Todd Mitchell, a
student in the Information Technology program,
has been awarded the SMART scholarship.
The Science, Mathematics And Research for
Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service
Program has been established by the Department
of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and
graduate students pursuing degrees in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
disciplines. The program aims to increase the
number of civilian scientists and engineers
working at DoD laboratories. The
award was for:
After graduating in Dec. 2012, Todd has
agreed to an 18 month service commitment. Both
the service commitment and internship will be at
Quantico with the Marine Corp Systems Command.
However, the service commitment is just the
beginning as he plan to stay with them as a
career. |

Student Success Story - English major nominated for a Pushcart Prize Roddy Fosburg, one of our English majors, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for his poem “My Own Ending.” The Pushcart Prize is one of the most significant recognitions for excellence in fiction and poetry, appearing in small presses. Annually, small presses nominate what they deem as the best work appearing in their journals that year. Roddy’s poem was nominated by the e-journal Niteblade.  Literary Event -
“An Afternoon Salon: Engaging The Book Thief”Taking inspiration from the literary “salons” of a bygone era, the salon will feature short presentations by 5-6 students, sharing what they found literally remarkable about the novel—its story and the way that story is told. Our hope is that their sharing will stimulate others in attendance to share their responses to the book. This will not be an academic lecture, but nor will it be a book-club chat. It will be somewhere in between. The students leading this event, USFSM majors in English and history, are very sharp and impressive, but they are also undergraduates; as such, I think their presenting can inspiring and instructive to other students, particularly in how to present analysis with focus and clarity.  Campus Event: Comus: The Melodrama*

(students of Dr. David Miller's ENL 4341 Milton class) for additional information please email Prof. Miller: dmiller9@sar.usf.edu Program Note Comus, as Milton's Ludlow masque is now called, is a court masque, an ostentatious display of wealth and status in which members of the court sing, dance, and declaim. This particular masque is a melodrama, as simple and profound as "Little Red Riding Hood." The place is the border of Wales in 1634. The occasion is the installation of a new governor. The problem, then as now, is getting the teen-age girl to daddy's house through a wolf-rich wood. Milton's actors, like ours, were amateurs, posing and posturing, more or less gracefully, through a series of allegorical tableaux. Our scenes are cartoon equivalents. His music, provided by the famous Harry Lawes, is a marriage of voice and verse. Our music, provided by iTunes, is jarringly anachronistic, yet wildly appropriate. Both winners will be sponsored to attend the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society annual convention in March in Pittsburgh! |

The first meeting of the USF Sarasota-Manatee Criminology Club met October 20th. The purpose of this organization shall be to promote interest in Criminology and Criminal Justice, while enabling students to learn about the exciting range of career opportunities in this growing field. Additionally, the Criminology Club will foster civic awareness and responsibility, appealing to all USF Sarasota-Manatee students. |

Rose Burke
will be graduating Sunday, May 9th from USF Sarasota-Manatee with her
Bachelor’s in English Literature. Rose, at 81, will be the
oldest graduate from USF this year. The honorees for our first annual Erik Miller Prize for Literary Criticism have been selected. The prize goes to Brittany Stamey for her essay “’I Die as Often as From Thee I Go’: The Image of the Parting Lovers in John Donne’s Profane Poetry.” Honorable mention goes to Jessica Szempruch for her essay “A Butterfly Forced from Her Cocoon: Imagery in ‘The Shawl.’” OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD – SPRING 2010 This Alumni Association-sponsored award recognizes one graduating senior each semester that has demonstrated exceptional achievements in the following: leadership, community service, work experience and school spirit. The Spring 2010 Alumni Outstanding Senior Award Committee has selected Valerie Connors. Ms. Connors is a student in the College of Arts & Sciences, majoring in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with Concentrations in Social Work and Women's Studies. In Spring 2009, USF Sarasota-Manatee established a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, and tapped its first members.
