Dr. John Wiginton is an Instructor of Information Technology at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Dr. Wiginton joined the Information Technology Department at USF Sarasota-Manatee in 2002, and has since been a driving force behind improving and enhancing the IT program. Dr. Wiginton has been responsible for revising the entire curriculum, focusing it on important contemporary issues in Information Technology. Over the past several years, responding to current market and industry needs, the program has been further expanded to include Baccalaureate Specializations and Certificates in Information Security as well as Web Design and Implementation. (more...)Other Specializations are currently under development.

Since joining USF, Dr. Wiginton has also taught courses for the College of Business Administration and the College of Engineering at USF.

Dr. Wiginton is Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. During his tenure at Lehigh University, Dr. Wiginton implemented a completely revised curriculum in Industrial Systems for both the undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate programs (M.S. and Ph.D) in Industrial Engineering. In support of those programs, he created a series of laboratories that offered state-of-the-art computing facilities for teaching and research in the Industrial Engineering Department. He was assisted in this effort by substantial financial support from both alumni and corporations. Dr. Wiginton also supervised the research of many graduate students at both the Masters and Doctoral level, while obtaining funding in excess of $500,000 in support of that research.

Previously, Dr. Wiginton was an Associate Professor of Finance (and MIS) in the School of Business at Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he taught in both the undergraduate and MBA programs. During that same time period, Dr. Wiginton co-authored two texts on Economic Theory of Finance (G. David Quirin and John C. Wiginton, Analyzing Capital Expenditures: Private and Public Perspectives) and Financial Management (Edwin H. Neave, Financial Management: Theory and Strategies). In addition to his contributions in the Finance area, Dr. Wiginton created and taught the first courses in MIS at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Further, in recognition of his interests in matters relating to computing and computers systems, Dr. Wiginton was cross-appointed to the Department of Computing and Information Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. His major contributions there were in the supervision of graduate research, and in the creation of a Transitional Program to assist students with baccalaureate degrees in other disciplines to enter the M.Sc. Program in Computing Science. This program was instrumental in maintaining and growing the enrollments in that graduate program, and it continues to operate to this day.

Dr. Wiginton is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with both a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA. He subsequently completed both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Economics and Statistics at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now the Tepper School of Management) at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Dr. Wiginton’s current research interests include software tools for Web 2.0 development, advanced concepts in Database Systems, Web Services, and Service- Oriented Architectures.
