USF Sarasota-Manatee faculty visit the
Universidad Autónoma del Yucatán (UADY)
|
|
In early December 2011, CAS faculty members Mike Fehily (Spanish) and
Robin Danzak (Communication Sciences & Disorders) traveled to Mérida, Mexico, to
meet with faculty and students at Universidad Autónoma del Yucatán (UADY).
During the visit, Mike Fehily met with undergraduate UADY students of the
English Education program who participate as E-Pals for USFSM students in Sr.
Mike's Spanish class. The participating UADY students received English
dictionaries donated by Rotary/Sister Cities of Sarasota. Robin Danzak
participated in a faculty meeting of the College of Education, and also
presented her research on Spanish-speaking, English language learners to
interested students and faculty. Through the use of Skype, a diverse group of
USFSM faculty was able to meet a group of UADY professors to discuss potential
research collaborations. Mike and Robin also met with the administration of the
UADY College of Education to discuss ways to increase interaction and
collaboration between the two institutions. Please visit
http://vimeo.com/33622413 to view a
video summarizing the experience.
Thanks to the Sister Cities linkage between
Sarasota and Mérida, Mexico, USFSM has developed
a partnership with the Universidad Autónoma del
Yucatán (UADY), one of the major state
universities of Mexico. For several semesters now,
Mike Fehily,
Spanish instructor at USFSM, has been
collaborating with a professor from UADY,
connecting USFSM students as e-Pals with UADY
students majoring in teaching English. The
experience has been successful both in helping
students attain language objectives and building
cross-cultural understanding through the
development of new friendships in an authentic,
language-learning context. The goal is
that this relationship can become a study-abroad opportunity for USFSM students
and to explore possible research
collaborations, continue dialog about faculty
exchange opportunities between USFSM and UADY..
It is expected that the activities at UADY will result in increased establishment of
the USFSM-UADY partnership in both teaching and
research. These outcomes will ultimately benefit
USFSM and the local community, as international
collaborations potentially translate into
well-prepared graduates ready to contribute
their skills at home and as participants in our
global economy.(hide...)

Dr. Valerie Lipscomb (English) featured in
Bradenton.com article
|
|
(more...)
Dr. Valerie Lipscomb
(English, British & American Literature) has been featured in an
article by Susan Hemmingway All the World's
a Stage on the Bradenton.com website. The
following is an excerpt from that article.
For Valerie Lipscomb, an English professor at
the University of South Florida
Sarasota-Manatee, age is about attitude. And no,
she’s not talking about, “you’re only as old as
you feel.”
“Does anyone say to a 20-year-old, ‘You’re only
as old as you feel?’” asks Lipscomb, who is 51.
She is the co-editor of the book “Staging Age:
The Performance of Age in Theatre, Dance, and
Film,” which was published last year and is
receiving international attention.
In May, she was invited to speak on “Age on
Stage: Performance and Possibility” at the Arts,
Media, and Culture Symposium on Performance and
Performativity at Maastricht University, The
Netherlands.
“Staging Age” is about how movie, dance and
stage performances portray age. The magic of the
theater can translate into a new understanding
of what it means to be older.
The youngest boomers are turning 47 and now
solidly into middle age. The oldest, born in
1946, are 65 this year, old enough for Medicare.
An immense generation of the elderly is just
ahead.
