This program provides students with an opportunity to develop a knowledge
and skill base as a "generalist" practitioner. Students will develop an an
understanding of various intervention methods and their application to a
variety of client systems. Intervention methods may include individual and
group counseling, resource development, case management, consultation,
teaching and advocacy.
Students also will develop an understanding of the dynamics of human
behavior, an awareness of social welfare systems and institutions and an
ability to employ basic social research skills, particularly related to the
processes of problem solving, planning, and evaluation.
This degree will prepare students for beginning professional practice as a
Generalist Social Worker, which can lead to career opportunities in a
variety of related occupational areas such as: child welfare, case
management, gerontology, criminal justice, community organizations and
health care.
The BSW also prepares students for the Master of Social Work graduate course
of study. Eligible BSW graduates can complete an accelerated course of study
leading to the Master of Social Work degree.7
