About the ProgramThe discipline of history embraces a diverse world of ideas, peoples, and events. Our faculty seeks to inform and question, to provoke and to challenge our students to a higher level of understanding of the past. History at USF offers the student an opportunity to explore civilizations from around the globe and from the ancient through contemporary eras. We encourage our students to move beyond traditional memorization of material to a critical level of thinking, analysis, and synthesis. Courses prepare students for graduate school, and provide practical knowledge, which can lead to career opportunities in a variety of related and diverse professions such as law, anthropology, archaeology, museums, libraries, public administration, journalism, genealogy, Foreign Service, politics, and education. Mission StatementThe curriculum for a bachelors degree in History at USF Sarasota-Manatee is designed to prepare students for a future in the history profession and other professions that require solid research, writing, and analytical skills. By the time History majors graduate, they should be able to write well organized and grammatically correct papers that contain clear thesis statements and evidence to support their arguments. Moreover, in each course, students will be trained in the evaluation of primary and secondary source materials, weighing the impact of historical context on the construction of documents a skill we label thinking historically. During their senior year, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired skills in the Pro-Seminar capstone course. Resident FacultyAdjunct Faculty
