USFSM honors students visit Immokalee |
|
On Friday, February 22, the USFSM honors students visited Immokalee, Florida
to learn about migrant farmworkers and various agencies who support them. Led by
professors Robin Danzak, College of Arts & Sciences, and
Jody Lynn McBrien,
College of Education, the 2013 honors cohort is researching various topics in
human migration through qualitative methods. The trip to Immokalee served to
delve deeper into these issues, as well as to practice qualitative data
collection in a real-life context. During tomato season, Immokalee is home to
over 30,000 migrant farmworkers who harvest the majority of tomatoes consumed in
the United States. |

USF Sarasota-Manatee Students to Host “One Book-One Community” Event Featuring Laura Hillenbrand’s UNBROKEN |
|
Five University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) students are hosting this year’s “One Book-One Community” event on Tuesday, February 19 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Selby Auditorium on campus. Admission is free and the event is open to the general public. More information on One Book-One Community can be found at onebooksarasota.com The book chosen by Sarasota County residents for this year’s discussion is UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand.
“I am thrilled that every year our students get to join others in the community as we read and discuss a wonderful book, said Dr. Jane Rose, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at USFSM. “This year, the community will be able to explore historically relevant subjects through the research of our student historians. This event demonstrates the role that a public university can play in enriching the intellectual life of its community; we aim to be a center for thought-provoking conversations, and we are always happy to give our students a chance to shine!”
A panel of USFSM student historians will host a thoughtful conversation on topics inspired by the book, and will be seeking audience feedback. Local high school students will also join the panel and offer their thoughts on historically relevant aspects of Hillenbrand’s gripping World War II story.
The five student historians and their topics include:
Kyle Kern will speak on “Broadcast Content: War on Propaganda on the Airways.”
Kern is a Sarasota native. After beginning his college career at Anderson
University, he is completing his degree at the USFSM, majoring in history, with
a minor in Political Science. His area of study is focused primarily in modern
European history, specifically in Russian and Slavic labor movements in the
nineteenth and twentieth century. After graduation, Kyle plans on pursuing a
PhD in history in order to pursue an academic career as a college professor.
