USFSM honors students visit Immokalee

On Friday, February 22, the USFSM honors students visited Immokalee, Florida to learn about migrant farmworkers and various agencies who support them. Led by professors Robin Danzak, College of Arts & Sciences, and Jody Lynn McBrien, College of Education, the 2013 honors cohort is researching various topics in human migration through qualitative methods. The trip to Immokalee served to delve deeper into these issues, as well as to practice qualitative data collection in a real-life context. During tomato season, Immokalee is home to over 30,000 migrant farmworkers who harvest the majority of tomatoes consumed in the United States.

2012 USF WE Week - Shelter Boxes donated by USF Sarasota-Manatee have been delivered to Nigeria

During World Engagement (WE) Week in Spring 2012, ShelterBox an international disaster relief charity, came to campus and set up one of their tents for some of our brave students to live in during the week. Our community raised $3,500 for Shelter Box, enough to contribute 4 boxes to people in the world needing disaster relief.   Dr. Robin Danzak, one of the organizers of WE week, received a letter from ShelterBox today letting us know that the boxes were recently delivered to Nigeria to aid their people affected by recent flooding.

Shelterbox13
Thanks to all who made WE Week 2012 such a success! Stay tuned for WE Week 2013, "WE R H2O", the week of February 25, 2013. This year, we will be building awareness about accessibility to clean drinking water and raising funds for Pack H2O: http://www.packh2o.com/  Maybe you will want to carry a water backpack around campus to support the cause!

Dr. Kathy Black's findings for the Aging with Dignity and Independence Initiative

Dr. Kathy Black (Social Work/Gerontology), through a partnership with The Patterson Foundation and  SCOPE, a community engagement organization, conducted research for the Aging with Dignity and Independence Initiative. The initiative, which completed data collection in 2010, uncovered six actionable themes that are essential to aging with dignity and independence in Sarasota County and beyond.

This link is to her findings in a guest post: Stakeholders in Aging Consortium Ignites Action Around Aging with Dignity and Independence on The Patterson Foundation's website:

USF Sarasota-Manatee Students to Host “One Book-One Community” Event Featuring Laura Hillenbrand’s UNBROKEN

Five University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) students are hosting this year’s “One Book-One Community” event on Tuesday, February 19 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Selby Auditorium on campus.  Admission is free and the event is open to the general public. More information on One Book-One Community can be found at onebooksarasota.com

Unbroken-OneBookOneCommunity

The book chosen by Sarasota County residents for this year’s discussion is UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand.

“I am thrilled that every year our students get to join others in the community as we read and discuss a wonderful book, said Dr. Jane Rose, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at USFSM. “This year, the community will be able to explore historically relevant subjects through the research of our student historians.  This event demonstrates the role that a public university can play in enriching the intellectual life of its community; we aim to be a center for thought-provoking conversations, and we are always happy to give our students a chance to shine!”

A panel of USFSM student historians will host a thoughtful conversation on topics inspired by the book, and will be seeking audience feedback.  Local high school students will also join the panel and offer their thoughts on historically relevant aspects of Hillenbrand’s gripping World War II story.

The five student historians and their topics include: (more...)

Kyle Kern will speak on “Broadcast Content: War on Propaganda on the Airways.” Kern is a Sarasota native.  After beginning his college career at Anderson University, he is completing his degree at the USFSM, majoring in history, with a minor in Political Science. His area of study is focused primarily in modern European history, specifically in Russian and Slavic labor movements in the nineteenth and twentieth century.  After graduation, Kyle plans on pursuing a PhD in history in order to pursue an academic career as a college professor.

Eric Geimer will touch on “The B-24 and Beyond.” Geimer, a Sarasota native, is currently enrolled as an Interdisciplinary Social Science major at USFSM, as well as in the Honors Program. He already holds a Bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Business from Florida State University, completed in 2010. After completion of the second undergraduate degree, Eric is planning to pursue a Ph.D. degree in History, focusing on the sociology and history of science and technology. He is looking forward to having the opportunity to share some of that passion with the local community.

Joe Noe will speak about “Hideki Tojo: Understanding the Enemy.” Noe is originally from Arkansas, however after spending five years in Germany as a part of the U.S. Army Band, he moved to Florida. There he pursued a degree in Radiologic Technology and worked in that field for several years before returning to school to pursue further educational goals in 2010. He is completing a degree in History, and has just begun a second major in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, concentrating in Anthropology and Sociology. After those degrees are finished, John plans to pursue a career as a political advisor or lobbyist for non-profit organizations serving the culturally disadvantaged.

Cody Ibasfalean will discuss “Bushido: Contextualizing Japanese POW Treatment.” Ibasfalean has been a resident of the Tampa Bay area his entire life.  He is 27 years old, married, and has a 13-month-old son named Landon.  His Major is History and his minor is Political Science.  He also has a strong background in Business Administration.  He will be graduating from the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee in May 2013, and plans to attend Law School in the fall.

Audrey Platt plans to speak about “The Scars that Don’t Show: The POW Effect.” Platt is a senior completing a bachelor’s degree in History at USFSM. In addition to her academic achievements in history, she is also accomplished in art.  Platt plans to pursue both of these passions after graduation, by continuing her education to become a certified public school teacher in both History and Art.  Her long-term goal is to return to the university to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in art, so she can be a college art professor and a painter.

Admission is free and the event is open to the general public. More information on One Book-One Community can be found at onebooksarasota.com
